Vintage Cake Plates

Ceramic Cake Plate Highlighting Mixed Fruit Buckwheat Galette

There is one consistent presentation that you may have noticed when I post pictures of pies. I love vintage cake plates! I have gained quite a collection during COVID as I have baking a lot more regularly.

Cake plates came in vogue during Victorian times when high tea became a regular custom. The idea was to elevate your pastry on a pedestal. Cake plates later became large flat dishes, especially in the 1950s.

From the 1950s to today, a variety of makers created cake plates out of various materials such as glass, pottery, ceramic and wood. Today vintage cake plates are coming are highly collectable on the market. While many collectors seek out the widely colored pieces such as ruby, vaseline, and blue glass, some collectors favor milk or clear glass.

My favorite cake plate is a vintage Fenton Silver Crest milk glass piece that came from my family. I love how it brings the most modest pastry up a level of elegance.
